(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – The U.S. Capitol launched a new six-month pilot program that would require Capitol Police officers to wear body cameras in order to increase public trust in law enforcement.
All the participants in the program had volunteered, and 70 officers have now been given cameras. The majority of the officers that are participating in this program are working outside Congress halls as they are interacting more with the public.
In a statement, Chief Tom Manger argued that he was confident that the cameras were going to do two things. The first is to remind how challenging the work of law enforcement agents could be and the second is to showcase how the officers were working to ensure greater accountability each day.
The cameras are going to be activated manually and are intended to record all of the actions of official law enforcement. Dashcams have also been installed in 11 USCP cruisers which will start to record automatically.
The body cameras worn by law enforcement officials are going to be turned off during all interactions with Congress members or interactions during Congress. The agency has noted that this is a means of protecting the Congress members’ constitutional duties.
After the pilot program is completed, the USCP leadership is going to be looking to the effective and practical. The program comes after a review of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol security footage that had captured the attack.
