In a strategic move, Representative Blake Moore of Utah switched his vote in the final moments, a procedural tactic that leaves the door open for reintroducing the resolution.
The outcome represents a notable defeat for House Republicans who have been vocal in their criticism of Mayorkas, accusing him of promoting policies that have exacerbated the border crisis. In response, Democrats and the Department of Homeland Security have labeled the impeachment attempt as politically driven and lacking constitutional foundation, urging a focus on practical solutions for border security.
Despite this setback, House Republicans, led by Homeland Security Chair Mark Green of Tennessee, have signaled their intention to revisit the issue, particularly upon the return of Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana from his medical leave.
