(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – In Florida, many of the events that were scheduled to take place during Pride Month have been canceled because of the new anti-LGBTQ laws signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).
In a Facebook post, organizers from St. Cloud, Fla., stated that the cancellation of the Pride event scheduled for next month is the result of the recent laws that were signed, which “created a climate of fear and hostility” for LGBTQ residents in Florida. They further note that this decision was not easily made, especially as many of these events took months to plan. The Bozanich Photography Collaborative further notes in their post that they were excited to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community but that, due to an array of factors, doing so would be “unsafe.”
The group proceeded to state that they would continue to work towards creating a safe and welcoming environment for people of the LGBTQ+ community in the state.
They are not the only organization to have canceled events recently. West Palm Beach NBC affiliate WPTV also reported that the local organizers in Port St. Lucie, Fla., had agreed to cancel their own Pride parade as well as scale back many of their Pride month events that targeted those who are 21 or older.
The cancellations are the result of DeSantis’s recent anti-LGBTQ bills that were signed into law last week. These prohibit minors from gaining access to gender-affirming care, from attending “adult live performances,” including drag shows, and from accessing public bathrooms consistent with their gender identity.
