In an MSNBC interview on Sunday, he mentioned that considerable efforts and funds are being used to portray the capital city in a negative light through various media channels.
Buttigieg pointed to his own experiences, claiming the city’s safety has improved, evidenced by his ability to walk his dog to the Capitol without fear—a contrast to the past. However, it’s important to note that Buttigieg has a security detail due to his governmental role.
His comments coincided with recent violent incidents in the city. On the same day as his interview, a quadruple shooting occurred approximately six miles from the Capitol, as reported by Fox 5. Furthermore, just days prior, a woman narrowly avoided injury during a shooting in southeast D.C., where a stray bullet broke her car window.
Earlier in the year, a man was indicted for breaking into a Secret Service vehicle near the residence of President Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, in November 2023.
Washington, D.C., has been grappling with increasing crime rates, despite city officials’ efforts to reassure the public. Phil Mendelson, the Chair of the D.C. Council, addressed the House Oversight Committee last year, acknowledging the crime concerns but advising residents not to panic.
Statistics from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department indicate a sharp rise in crime in the city last year compared to 2022. The data shows a nearly 35% increase in homicides and a 67% rise in robberies. Overall, violent crime surged by almost 40% in 2023 compared to the year before.
However, recent data suggests a slight decrease in violent crime rates in the city as of April 8 compared to the same timeframe last year.
