The National Nuclear Regulator reported that ventilation units serving temporary maintenance tents inside the reactor building briefly lost power. When those fans stopped, some radioactive particles that should have stayed trapped in the tents drifted into the surrounding work area, which was still inside the thick concrete and steel containment structure. How Much Radiation Workers Actually Received

Koeberg is 42 years old and being pushed toward a 60-year life extension. Past minor internal contamination events with cobalt-58 dust in 2010 and iodine-131 in 2021 show that small, contained radiological issues are not new for this plant. From a conservative, common-sense view, this history does not prove the site is dangerous to the public today, but it does support a demand for tight maintenance, honest reporting, and real consequences when equipment fails, even in low-risk ways.

Officials and regulators say these Koeberg events did not meet the criteria for a nuclear or radiological emergency and produced no off-site radiological consequences. South Africa’s government is still pressing ahead with plans for about 5.2 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity, painting the incidents as proof that safety systems work even when something goes wrong. For many citizens, though, Eskom’s history of breakdowns and past leaks makes every reassurance sound like spin, especially when broader energy policy is on the line.

That kind of fear-mongering clashes with basic conservative values, which favor facts over hysteria and expect media to distinguish between a minor, contained anomaly and a real disaster. At the same time, responsible skepticism is healthy: citizens are right to ask for independent environmental sampling around Cape Town and open calibration records for radiation monitors. Low-risk does not mean “no questions allowed,” especially when the state wants more reactors and the same institutions are policing their own mistakes.
