DSA Shares TERRIFYING STAT About How Much Government They Control

Hello my name is Socialist name tag on suit.

Democratic Socialists just swept three New York City congressional races and control the mayor’s office — and they’re already eyeing more.

Story Snapshot

  • Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayor’s race in November 2025 with nearly 51% of the vote, becoming the city’s youngest mayor in over a century.
  • Three candidates backed by Mamdani won NYC congressional primaries in June 2025, knocking out two sitting Democratic congressmen by wide margins.
  • Young voters broke hard for Mamdani — 75% of voters aged 18–29 supported him, and youth turnout hit 28%.
  • Trump called Mamdani a communist and threatened to cut federal funds to the city; House Speaker Mike Johnson blasted the “radical socialist agenda.”

Socialist Sweep in New York City

Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral election on November 4, 2025, taking 50.78% of the vote. He carried four of the city’s five boroughs — Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx — topping one million votes. No mayor had won that many boroughs since John Lindsay back in 1969. Bernie Sanders swore him in as mayor on January 1, 2026.[1]

Mamdani didn’t stop at City Hall. Three candidates he backed won Democratic congressional primaries in June 2025. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member, defeated five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Brad Lander beat incumbent Dan Goldman in the 10th District by more than 30 points. Claire Valdez won the 7th District by 20 points. All three races flipped sitting Democrats out of office.[2]

Young Voters Drove the Results

The numbers behind Mamdani’s win tell a clear story about who is reshaping New York’s politics. Voters aged 18 to 29 backed him at a 75% rate, and youth turnout reached 28% — high for a local election. Mamdani also won 81% of voters who had lived in New York City for less than 10 years, and 66% of first-time voters.[6] That’s a coalition built heavily on newer and younger residents, not longtime New Yorkers.

How Much Does DSA Actually Control?

The DSA’s New York City chapter had about 14,000 members as of early 2026. That sounds large, but it’s roughly 0.16% of the city’s 8.8 million people.[11] Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist, but no documented evidence shows the DSA’s national organization formally directed his campaign strategy.[10] The wins are real — the claim of organizational “control” over city government is harder to pin down with hard evidence.

The movement also has clear limits. NBC News analyst Steve Kornacki noted that DSA-backed candidates have struggled outside heavily Democratic, urban neighborhoods. A DSA-backed candidate in Utah’s newly redrawn 1st Congressional District lost decisively. In New York’s 15th Congressional District, incumbent Ritchie Torres won easily despite pressure from left-wing activists.[7] The socialist wave is real in deep-blue cities — but it hasn’t broken through in competitive districts.

Trump Fires Back, Questions Loom on Spending

President Trump labeled Mamdani a communist and threatened to withhold federal funds from New York City. House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned what he called a “radical, expansive government socialist agenda.” Those reactions reflect how seriously national Republicans are taking the DSA’s urban gains. Republicans are also exploring ways to tie New York Governor Kathy Hochul to Mamdani’s far-left positions ahead of her next race.

Mamdani has pushed big promises — rent freezes, expanded public housing, and broad social programs. But critics point out he has released no detailed budget plan to pay for any of it. The BBC reported that skeptics question how he will fund these initiatives, especially without any prior executive experience.[4] New York City already faces serious fiscal pressure. Promising more government spending without a clear funding source is a pattern conservatives have seen before — and it rarely ends well for taxpayers.
