Sarah Godlewski (D), the Wisconsin Secretary of State, has been pushing for a Republican who had been one of former President Donald Trump’s fake electors to be taken off the state election commission. The Republican in question has previously admitted that his efforts were part of an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Godlewski sent a letter to Devin LeMahieu (R), the state Senate Majority Leader, calling for Robert Spindell Jr. to be removed from the Wisconsin Elections Commission, where he has served with five others, two of which are Republicans. In her letter, she points out that last week a lawsuit was settled revolving around Wisconsin fake electors.
In the letter, she wrote that it was “abhorrent” that Spindell Jr. had admitted to knowingly participating in a coordinated attempt to overturn the election, which included his submission of a fraudulent election document. She added that Wisconsin deserved to have in place Election Commissioners who have shown respect for the law.
She added that based on Spindell Jr.’s acknowledgment of his involvement in the plot to overturn the election, she was calling for him to be removed immediately from the Election Commission.
Spindell is one of the 10 fake electors in Wisconsin who conceded to being part of the attempts to overturn the election. The settlement was part of a lawsuit brought forth by Democratic electors for $2.4 million. The Republicans in question are not going to be paying for any damages, or attorney’s fees in connection to the deal. However, they have pledged that in 2024 they would not be serving as electors.
