( – In the last few months, there has been an increase in the levels of retail theft, prompting many businesses to take direct measures to keep their merchandise safe. More recently, social media users took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share photos of Walmart locking jeans and other merchandise behind glass security doors in an attempt to mitigate this phenomenon.

One user, @WallStreetSilv, shared a photo of the store with the jeans locked behind security doors. Anyone who wants to purchase one of the items is going to be required to call an employee who can open the locked doors. In the post, the user shares that soon enough stores are going to resort to being pickup and delivery only, which would benefit corporations as brick-and-mortar stores tend to be more expensive to operate. The user added that it is likely that an online model is going to take over in the future.

A spokesperson for Walmart shared on Friday that they are not sure which exact store the photos depict, but certain items are “subject to additional security.” He added that those differ in each store and that Walmart would continue looking at measures that can be taken for their merchandise to remain safe so that prices can remain low for consumers and products can be in stock.

A different X user, @TTEcclesBrown, posted in response to the photo that Walmart was locking every item up in areas with high theft rates.
