(RestoreAmericanGlory.com)- Sunday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) claimed that former President Donald Trump is, in his view, “absolutely” disqualified from the presidential race in 2024 over his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Dana Bash, Raskin was asked about whether he shared Republican presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson’s assessment that the 14th Amendment of the Constitution disqualified Trump from running for the White House again. According to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” is not eligible to run for office again.
Rankin responded by stating that the 14th Amendment shows that Trump is “absolutely” disqualified. As he argued, the particular section that was added after the Civil War does not allow for anyone who was sworn into office and participated in an insurrection to hold office again. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives over his role in the insurrection, and 57 out of the 100 senators also found that Trump had incited an insurrection.
Raskin added that, based on all of this, he agrees with both Hutchison and the conservative Federalist Society law professors over their assessment that Trump was disqualified from participating in the 2024 presidential election.
Earlier this month, Trump was federally indicted on four charges connected to his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He has also been indicted in Georgia over his attempts to overturn the election results in the state.
