( – On Sunday, both the GOP and many Democrats blasted Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) after she stated that there needed to be more “balanced” criticisms made regarding the war between Israel and Hamas. Her comments were made in response to a question about progressives not talking about the allegations that Hamas had been responsible for the rape of Israeli women.

Progressive caucus chair Jayapal was quick to condemn the possible sexual violence against women on Oct. 7. However, she proceeded to state that Israel had killed, in retaliation, 15,000 Palestinians. As she pointed out during her appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” two-thirds of those killed by Israel were women and children.

CNN host Dana Bash pointed out that most progressive women have not made any remarks regarding the alleged sexual assaults committed by Hamas during the October 7 attack. In response, Jayapal pointed out that she was not entirely sure whether or not the accusations were true. She added that there was always talk about how women were impacted by war. She added that she has condemned the actions of Hamas and that she has previously condemned rape.

However, she was quick to change the conversation by pointing out that Israel has not complied with international humanitarian law. She added that morally, it was not possible to “say that one war crime deserves another.”

Bash was quick to push back against these comments and argued that she had been asking about women but that the congresswoman had swiftly changed the conversation back to Israel.
