Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who on Thursday joined former President Donald Trump in New York where he attended the hush money trial, reiterated his attacks on the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan who is overseeing the criminal case. In his statement, he argued that she was a “political operative.”
Scott had been in Manhattan to support Trump who is in the midst of a trial relating to the 34 felony counts of falsifying business records that are connected to the attempts to cover up his alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The charges specifically relate to a $130,000 hush money payment made on Trump’s behalf to Stormy Daniels.
The Senator stated in front of the courthouse that Merchan’s daughter was a Democratic operative and argued that because of her nature of work, the judge’s impartiality was tainted. These are not the first remarks of this sort, as Trump has also in the past made similar remarks which resulted in Merchan expanding the gag order against Trump to include the family members of the judge.
Scott argued that Merchan’s daughter was fundraising for the Democrats. In a “Fox News Sunday” interview the senator had been asked about his criticisms of someone who was not involved in politics, but Scott doubled down on his position. He argued that the Democrats were just trying to use the court system to prosecute Trump and go after their political opponent. He then referred to them as “thugs” for attempting to block Trump from being able to run for office.
