(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – Actress Kerry Washington will be joining former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Illinois) to lead a recruitment effort aimed at getting more poll workers ahead of November’s elections.
Washington and Kinzinger will serve as co-chairs of the advisory council, Power the Polls, according to an announcement the nonpartisan organization made on Thursday.
The pair will be part of the 14-member advisory council, which includes “prominent” veteran, political, cultural, and “advocacy leaders” who will attempt to get more Americans to volunteer at polling places on election day.
In a statement, the former Scandal actress described poll workers as the “frontline heroes of democracy” touting their work as necessary to ensure Americans can cast their votes “safely and securely.”
The actress, who campaigned for President Joe Biden in 2020, added that “recruiting poll workers” proved the organization’s commitment to preserving “trust” in the country’s electoral system, particularly when U.S. “democracy is under threat.”
Kinzinger, who was part of a handful of Republicans on the January 6 Committee into former President Donald Trump’s actions on January 6, shared Washington’s sentiment.
The Illinois Republican, who left Congress last year when he chose not to run for his seventh term, declared that poll workers are integral at maintaining “free and fair” elections “At a time” when the country’s democracy faces “unique and historic threats.”
For years, officials have been warning the U.S. is facing a critical shortage of election workers. They suggest the decline in election workers is the result of threats that experts say stem from false claims of election fraud in 2020.
