(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – On Saturday, the Democrats praised House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for putting forward a stopgap spending bill that allowed them to avoid a government shutdown.
In the past few weeks, the House has been attempting, without success, to pass government funding measures. The Republican slim majority in the House also meant that a small number of more right-wing GOP members were able to block the continuing resolution from moving forward, stating that they would only support a funding deal that included much harsher spending cuts.
On Saturday, McCarthy, in an attempt to stop the government from shutting down, put forward a “clean” stopgap funding bill that did not include any of the spending cuts that the GOP had been pushing for. The bill passed through the House in a 335-91 vote, with the support of 209 Democrats. The Senate passed the bill in an 88-9 vote, which then led to the bill being signed by Biden right before the midnight deadline. The stopgap bill will allow the government to remain funded until mid-November, which will allow the House to negotiate more long-term funding options.
While there were GOP members on the far right who slammed McCarthy for this move, many Republicans praised him.
Representative Eric Swalwell (D), in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, stated that she admired McCarthy for putting up with the “clowns” in his party, including Reps. Gaetz and Biggs. Representative Daniel Goldman stated that he agreed with that statement and that he did not expect McCarthy to have the backbone to stand up to the MAGA faction of his party. He added that this was why he was the House Speaker and not the MAGA cult speaker. McCarthy was ousted from his position as House Speaker on Tuesday after the House voted 216-210.
