(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – On Friday, Senator Lisa Murkowski (Republican-Alaska) claimed that the 37-count indictment that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) special counsel Jack Smith has brought against former President Trump is “quite serious” and should not be easily dismissed.
In the past Murkowski had argued that the Republican Party needed to leave Trump in its past. She is also one of the only seven Senate Republicans who had voted in favor of Trump being indicted in connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. She further claimed that mishandling classified documents was considered a federal crime not just because of the material stored in those documents, but also because of the resources and methods necessary in order to have access to these systems.
She proceeded to argue that “The unlawful detention and obstruction of justice” should also be considered criminal matters when dealing with classified documents. She added that anyone who is found guilty of these crimes regardless of their position should face the exact same consequences.
She is not the only Republican to not jump on Trump’s side following the indictment announcement. Senator Mitt Romney (Republican-Utah) also put out a statement in which he said that it looked like the DOJ and the special counsel had taken extreme care in looking into this case and that Trump had the chance to avoid charges. He added that Trump had had more chances to change the charges than other people did.
