( – Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost is pushing House Republicans to introduce a mock bill that he has written for them which would call for the removal of the Statue of Liberty. As he has stated this bill would be introduced because of their policies on immigration in the U.S.-Mexico border.

The first-time legislator read out a portion of the poem “The New Colossus,” which is part of the Statue of Liberty’s lower sections and is meant to act as a message for all the immigrants that were reaching the United States of America in the 19th century.

During Wednesday’s hearing of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, Frost called for the GOP House members, and especially Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) to back the bill for the removal of the Statue of Liberty because of their treatment of immigrants and the H.R. 2 bill they have passed which is going to be restricting who is eligible to go through the asylum process. The Republicans have also been pushing for several harsher policies and for undocumented immigrants to be under surveillance.

Frost argued that immigrants deserved better handling than the one they were given and that the Republicans were planning to reject them with their bigoted bill. He added that since they had pushed the H.R. 2 bill they also needed to pass the bill he had drafted for them which would remove the Statue of Liberty, which as he has argued is a symbol that the country was welcoming all of the immigrants that were arriving.
