A Nightmarish Vacation
On August 1, a Cancun vacation for an Oklahoma family took a dark turn when Oklahoma State University students Zara Hull and Kaylie Pitze reportedly became unconscious after unknowingly drinking tainted water at a resort. Their drug-induced stupor set off a chain of harrowing events that thrust the family into a perilous medical crisis.
Hull’s boyfriend, Jake, found the unconscious girls and promptly took them to their room. However, the situation worsened dramatically, leading Jake to rush them to a local hospital. Things continued to spiral out of control from there, turning what was supposed to be a dream vacation into a terrifying ordeal.
A Terrifying Hospital Experience
The hospital experience left the family deeply shaken. Hull was heavily sedated and incoherent, unable to communicate. Jake was not allowed to stay with her and had to pay $200 for a hospital room. Left alone and afraid for his safety, Jake was not permitted to see Hull until the following morning.
Drugged in Cancún?
A 20-year-old US college student had convulsions and was hospitalized in Cancún after she and her friend both became ill after consuming what they believe were spiked drinks at a resort in the Caribbean coast city.@PHHotelsResortshttps://t.co/k65RbDwOUd

Amidst mounting fears that Hull was at risk of either trafficking or organ harvesting, Jake intervened just as she was about to be moved for an MRI. The family’s anxiety hit a peak as they struggled to protect her and figure out the safest course of action.
“He told them to STOP EVERYTHING he’s taking her out. We told him, ‘do NOT let them take her, do NOT let them do anything else to her-we were working on getting them out!,” Snider recounted.
Desperate Measures and Homecoming
Hull’s family negotiated with the U.S. Embassy to facilitate her transfer to Dallas for further treatment. The hospital initially demanded a $10,000 deposit, and an additional $25,000 for continued care or $5,000 for her release. The family’s ordeal continued as they struggled to find a hospital in Dallas willing to accept Hull due to non-cooperation from the Mexican hospital in sending her medical records.
Ultimately, a family friend helped arrange a $28,000 private medical plane to medevac Hull and another family member to Texas. Once finally back in Oklahoma, Hull was hospitalized and began the long journey to recovery.
So some friends of ours’ kid went on a senior trip to Cancun, Mexico and was slipped a Mickey BY the hotel, ended up in the hospital, intubated, drugged again, basically jobbed, by hotel, hospital, police everything, $12k day in ICU, $60k by the time they got him home, and snotty

A Warning to Travelers
Doctors have found no definitive cause for Hull’s multiple convulsions despite ruling out any initial suspicion of drugs in her system. Mexican law enforcement claims that the allegations against the Cancun resort are false, classifying the incident as exaggerated and resulting from “simple alcohol consumption.” However, these claims have done little to ease the trauma experienced by Hull and her family.
“This is really hitting home tonight as I sit here and think about just one week ago today our worst nightmare started,” said Stephanie Snider, whose son Jake is dating Hull.
The family is now seeking donations to cover Hull’s mounting medical bills, which have reached tens of thousands of dollars. Their story serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers awaiting tourists in foreign paradises, emphasizing the need for increased caution and awareness among travelers.
