(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – NYC Mayor Eric Adams has supported bipartisan legislation to remove several “sanctuary city” laws.
The legislation, proposed by a group of New York City council members who are part of the Common Sense Caucus, is a significant shift in the dark-blue city that has been at loggerheads with federal authorities for years.
According to reports, the bill will roll back laws former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted that forbid NYC police officers from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Adams acknowledged that “the previous administration made a big mistake,” and suggested the city “correct that aspect of it.”
He noted that “New Yorkers” should feel safe in the city, adding that his concerns weren’t singling out migrants but that he would have the “same” concerns should anyone break the law or do “something violent to New Yorkers.”
The law de Blasio had enacted prevented New York City law enforcement officials from honoring ICE detainer requests. These requests appeal to local law enforcement to detain an individual in custody for longer to allow an ICE agent to arrive and apprehend them.
De Blasio’s law resulted in a significant decline in ICE’s detainer requests in NYC.
Despite receiving Adams’ support, it’s unclear how the bill will fare in a predominantly liberal Democrat council.
Last month, the Common Sense Caucus also had to justify the bill amid backlash, publicly releasing the bill in response to the uproar.
At the time, Robert Holden, a Democratic Council Member, and the bill’s co-sponsor, highlighted that the city had “enough criminals” and didn’t “need to import more and protect them as well.”
Holden described repealing sanctuary city laws as “common sense.”
