( – President Biden remarked that he would be abstaining from interacting with the media for Lent as a humorous gesture on Ash Wednesday.

While President Biden and the First Lady, Jill Biden, were admiring the Valentine’s Day decorations set up on the north lawn of the White House on Wednesday afternoon, the President was queried by journalists about his Lenten sacrifice.

His response was a playful, “You guys.”

On Ash Wednesday, which coincidentally aligned with Valentine’s Day this year, President Biden took part in a mass held at the White House, where he also received his ashes.

Ash Wednesday signifies the commencement of Lent, a period of reflection and penance observed by many Christians, including those of the Roman Catholic faith. It’s noteworthy that President Biden is the second Catholic to hold the office of President in the history of the United States.

In the previous year, 2022, President Biden, who is famously fond of ice cream, shared that he had chosen to forego sweets for the duration of Lent.

During that Lenten season, Cardinal Wilton Gregory administered ashes to Biden at the White House during a private mass. The identity of the individual who provided President Biden with his ashes this year was not disclosed by the White House.

The previous year saw President Biden in Warsaw on Ash Wednesday, where he participated in a private Catholic Mass in a hotel room, officiated by a Polish priest. Later that day, during a meeting with NATO allies, President Biden was observed with the traditional cross of ashes on his forehead.

The President did not make any public declarations regarding his Lenten observance last year.
