( – Vice President Harris is going to be traveling to Switzerland on June 15 to attend the Summit on Peace in Ukraine following a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to have President Joe Biden in attendance.

Harris’s participation in the summit further underscores the federal administration’s commitment to ensuring that Ukraine continues to be supported as they try to find a peaceful solution to the conflict that will respect the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty as well as the UN Charter.

The vice president will not be attending the summit alone as she will be joined by Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser. During her time in Switzerland, she is also going to be reaffirming the administration’s support for the people of Ukraine and their right to defend themselves against the Russian attack.

Last week Zelensky had called for Biden to attend the summit, appealing to both him and Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend so that they could use their position to advance towards peace. However, despite this request, Biden is going to be spending June 15 attending a high-dollar fundraiser in Los Angeles with former President Barack Obama. Many Hollywood stars including Julia Roberts and George Clooney are also going to be attending the fundraiser.

John Kirby, the national security communications officer has defended the decision of the President to not be at the summit, pointing out that Biden has remained committed to showing support to Ukraine even during the House Republican stalemate on the issue.
