(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – Officials have confirmed that the Biden administration would soon bring forward new tariffs for Chinese imported solar cells and electric vehicles (EVs). These are part of the administration’s attempts to bring down emissions in the United States.
Officials have stated that the tariff is going to be increased from 25 percent to 100 percent on all Chinese EV imports as a way of offsetting the production practices in the country. As they argued these practices favored Chinese automakers while harming foreign and U.S. automakers. It also resulted in Chinese vehicles being unfairly underpriced when they were brought into foreign markets.
Apart from addressing the disparity in EV prices, the Biden administration is also planning on doubling tariffs on Chinese solar cell imports. Officials have mentioned that there will be a 50 percent increase which is aiming to counteract the dominance of the Chinese in global solar production. Currently, Chinese production makes up around 70 percent of global production.
The tariffs are in large part symbolic, as the existing tariffs have been enough to keep Chinese imports from entering the U.S. market. In February President Biden had ordered an investigation into the possible national security risks posed by these Chinese-manufactured vehicles that have internet connectivity.
The Biden administration is aiming to bring down greenhouse gas emissions while increasing EV proliferation and looking to address the concerns about how these vehicles could result in Americans losing their jobs.
Former President Donald Trump was the first to enforce solar cell tariffs on China in 2018. These were extended during the Biden administration.
