(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – On Wednesday, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital that he expressed frustration over other members of the House GOP opposing the stopgate proposal that would allow the government to remain funded for an additional month and could help them avoid a government shutdown. He added that the proposal covered 30 days, included an 8 percent spending cut on all spending, excluding defense and veteran spending, and had a strong border security bill attached to it.
He then stated that he did not have anything to say to his colleagues other than “You’re going to eat a sandwich, and you probably deserve to eat it.”
The proposal was originally negotiated by the Main Street Caucus and the Freedom Caucus, to which Roy belongs. The continuing resolution (CR) was originally announced on Sunday night and included spending cuts and a large part of H.R. 2, excluding the eVerify provision. However, the day after the announcement of the proposal, over a dozen conservatives opposed it. Some even stated that before moving forward with the CR, they wanted to see other members of the House GOP commit to having the 12 appropriations bills spending not exceed $1.4 trillion.
Following a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Roy noted that currently everything is focused on “what will be a spending topline” in order to pass the appropriations bills. He added that he would be happy if they proceeded with some of the appropriations bills at $1.4 trillion and that he would move forward with relative amounts that could help achieve that goal. However, as he pointed out, not everyone in his conference was willing to move forward that way.
