(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released a new poll that showed that Americans are almost evenly split on whether or not former President Trump should face prison time following his New York hush money case felony conviction.

Around 50 percent of respondents oppose a prison sentence, while 48 percent are in support. In May Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Trump is the first U.S. president, either sitting or former, to become a convicted felon. The case is connected to a hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels by Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, and more specifically the reimbursement for the payment.

Party affiliations heavily influenced the opinions on this issue, with 78 percent of Democrats stating Trump should face prison time, while 86 percent of Republicans argued that he should not. There is a more even split among Independents, with 46 percent being against prison time, and 50 percent being in favor of it.

Eighty percent of Democrats approve of the conviction while 55 percent of Republicans disapprove of it. The split is more equal among Independents as 21 percent disapprove of it while 32 percent approve of it.

Originally Trump’s sentencing was set to take place only three days before the Republican National Convention, however, the sentencing has since been delayed to September.

Legal experts have pointed out that if Trump faces incarceration for a first-time charge it would be unusual. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has not indicated if prosecutors are going to seek prison time for Trump.
