(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – A new “smishing” attack has been reported, with hackers specifically targeting Apple users. From the start of technology being introduced into people’s daily lives, there has been a rise in scammers who have attempted to take advantage of vulnerable individuals.
The hackers behind the “smishing attempt,” which specifically refers to phishing attacks through text messages” appear to be attempting to access people’s Apple ID login. This was reported by Macworld and 9to5Mac.
Both outlets have noted that Apple users have been getting messages from supposed service representatives which include links to websites. However, after clicking on the link the user is taken to a login page for iCloud, which gives a false sense of legitimacy through the CAPTCHA included on the page.
Last week, Symantec put out a protection bulletin where they shared an example of what such a message might look like. The security software suite company has noted that these types of messages have also been received through email by some Apple users. It was noted that it is still unclear what the extent of these attacks is.
There are several indications that these messages are sent by bad actors, the most important of which is that it is unlikely that the messages are legitimate if you’re not working with Apple support at that time.
It is also worth noting that Apple does not use CAPTCHA login and that instead, users receive a text of having to use Touch of Face ID to log in. The domain used in these emails is also generic, unlike the Apple-specific domain.
